The Calangute panchayat has fined three hotels Rs 1 lakh each for discharging sewage onto roads and into drains, causing unsanitary conditions exacerbated by rainwater. Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, addressing reporters on Friday, highlighted the potential negative impact on tourism. Failure to pay the fines will result in the revocation of trade licenses and further action from the state pollution control board. The fine, previously Rs 25,000, was increased to create awareness and deter such practices. Despite prior warnings, the hotels continued to release sewage, leading to the penalty.
