Amid the commencement of Jallikattu, political opponents in Goa are urging the government to legalize Dhirio and recognize it as a sport. MLA Vijai Sardesai, Capt Venzy Viegas, and former minister Churchill Alemao have expressed their support. In 2014, the Supreme Court imposed a ban on Jallikattu, but in 2017, the Tamil Nadu government legalized the event with certain regulations. Following protests, the Supreme Court in India upheld the law allowing ‘Jallikattu’ in Tamil Nadu in May 2023.
