With a surge of New Year celebrants flocking to Goa, the state police are taking proactive steps to counter potential narcotics use during the festivities. Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan addressed the media in Panaji on Wednesday, outlining the comprehensive efforts to ensure a secure environment, especially at key venues like the Sunburn EDM festival.

The highly-anticipated Sunburn festival is set to kick off at Vagator from Thursday, December 28, extending until December 30. Superintendent Valsan revealed the establishment of specialized teams, featuring local police, the Crime Branch, Anti-narcotic cell, and forensic experts, strategically positioned to monitor crucial areas.

These teams are tasked not only with surveillance but also with the enforcement of measures against drug peddling and consumption. Rigorous testing using spectrometers will provide immediate results on substances seized, and individuals found in possession of drugs will face swift legal consequences.To address concerns regarding individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the state police have introduced a Mobile Rapid Screening Test System. Those found under the influence of drugs will be booked under the NDPA (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act).The Sunburn Festival, spanning from December 28 to December 30, 2023, boasts a diverse lineup featuring both domestic and international artists across various EDM genres. Headliners such as Hardwell, Alesso, Timmy Trumpet, and Charlotte De Witte will be complemented by an impressive array of international talent, including John Newman, Sander van Doorn, VINAI, Bassjackers, Siana Catherine, Teri Miko, Candice Redding, and Korolova, alongside other exceptional artists from both the domestic and international scenes. The recent disappointment of EDM enthusiasts arose when the much-awaited performance of headliner Alesso had to be canceled due to the government’s refusal to grant permission for the festival on the 31st.
