In an effort to minimize waiting times for persons with disabilities (PwDs) and senior citizens requiring devices such as wheelchairs, prosthetics, hearing aids, and spectacles, the Union government is set to inaugurate the first PM Divyasha Kendra (PMDK) in Goa on Wednesday. The center, to be located at Goa Medical College, Bambolim, will be launched during the ongoing six-day International Purple Fest, which focuses on the inclusion of PwDs.
Previously, PwDs in the state primarily accessed camps organized by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), with its nearest marketing center in Mumbai. ALIMCO, the largest manufacturer of aid and appliances for disabilities and age-related infirmities in South Asia, falls under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, a division of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
