From June 2024, Driving License Tests Move to Private Centers; New Penalties for Traffic Violations

Effective June 1, 2024, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will no longer require driving tests at government RTOs for obtaining a license in India. Authorized private driving training centers can now conduct tests and issue eligibility certificates.

Traffic violation penalties have also been updated: speeding fines remain between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000, while minors caught driving will face a Rs 25,000 fine, cancellation of the vehicle owner’s registration card, and will be ineligible for a license until age 25.
