Ramesh Verma, the Chief Electoral Officer, has highlighted a notable discrepancy in voter turnout between urban and rural areas. According to Verma, recent election data reveals a consistent trend of higher voter participation in rural areas compared to lower turnout in urban regions such as Panjim, Margao, Taleigoa, and Fatorda.
The perplexing aspect of this observation is that urban residents, who generally have higher levels of education and access to information through mediums like newspapers and television channels, exhibit a concerning reluctance to actively participate in the voting process. Verma has chosen to address this issue under the theme of “Urban Apathy among Youth towards Elections.”
Verma has encouraged participants who haven’t yet registered in the voter list to complete their enrollment online through the official website. Additionally, he shared that Goa has a total of 11,66,939 voters. The Chief Electoral Officer’s emphasis on addressing urban apathy and promoting online voter registration underscores the importance of engaging the urban populace, particularly the youth, in the democratic process.
