Supreme Court Overturns Remission Orders in Bilkis Bano Gangrape Case

The Supreme Court has overturned the remission orders for 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case, stating that the state cannot utilize powers under Article 142 to keep the 11 rapists at liberty. Bilkis Bano, 21 years old and five months pregnant at the time, was gang-raped in 2002 while escaping the Gujarat riots following the Godhra train burning incident. Tragically, her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members killed. The 11 men, sentenced to life imprisonment, were released from the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 under the Gujarat government’s remission policy after serving over 15 years in jail.
